Exploring industrial pathways for plastic waste gasification: Wojciech Jerzak’s research stay in Belfast

From 28 September to 29 October 2026, Prof. Wojciech Jerzak from AGH University of Krakow completed a 32-day research stay at the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Queen’s University Belfast, UK. He was hosted by Professor Chunfei Wu.

His work was focused on plastic waste gasification and the transition from laboratory demonstrations to industrial applications. Particular attention was given to process integration, technology scale-up and pathways towards practical implementation. The work addressed how developments in individual conversion stages can contribute to an integrated process suitable for industrial operation.

This perspective places emphasis on the challenges that arise when promising research findings are translated into larger-scale technologies. Considering these challenges together helps identify research priorities and assess potential directions for the further development of plastic waste gasification.

Scientific discussions with Professor Chunfei Wu and other researchers were an important part of the stay. Meeting colleagues with different areas of expertise provided opportunities to exchange ideas and discuss approaches to thermochemical waste conversion. These conversations also helped identify shared scientific interests and potential topics for future joint research.

The work carried out during this stay will be presented at the 17th Conference on Research and Development in Power Engineering 1 – 4 December 2026, Warsaw, providing an opportunity to share its findings with the wider scientific community.

Wojciech Jerzak sincerely thanks Professor Chunfei Wu and his colleagues for their hospitality and scientific exchange through CUPOLA
